Composting is a wonderful practice for decreasing additions to landfill as well as creating a highly effective and useful product for the garden. Learn the basic principles and science of composting, how to get your home compost set up and which options are best for your space.
11:30 a.m. Dr. John Hill, Central Iowa Mineral Society— A Journey to the Fern Forests of the Pennsylvanian Era
Dr. Hill will begin by describing the Pennsylvanian Era (~200 million years ago) when the coal measures were laid down and its place in the sweep of earth’s geological history. He will describe the fern forests, plants and animals of that era and how the nodular fern fossils were formed. Then he will discuss the various types of fern fossils with pictures, some from fossils he collected. At the end view some examples of actual fern fossils and will have one or two examples for door prizes.
