Ethical Values

Created and approved by the VegLife Des Moines Board of Directors on 11/18/2018, amended 02/01/2022

Values we believe cannot be compromised under any circumstances, regardless of the ends we are pursuing.

Compassion for Animals

Non-human animals are deserving of respectful and compassionate treatment. They don’t exist for our consumption or amusement and deserve the same bodily autonomy as us.

Integrity

We will not use misinformation to further our cause, and actively seek out new information that will keep us growing individually and as an organization. We take responsibility for the accuracy of the information we present and the outcomes of our actions. In all of our actions, we strive to be honest and open to constructive criticism.

Nonviolence

We are committed to treating everyone, including those with opposing views and other activists, with respect. We will not engage in verbal or physical abuse, hostility, intimidation, or the destruction of others’ property.

Non-Discrimination

Ending the oppression of animals leads us to eschew participation in other forms of oppression such as racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, transphobia, and homophobia. We will work against these forms of oppression inside and outside of the organization, and we will make sure that our actions and events do not demean or exploit others.

Environmental Stewardship

We are committed to environmentally sustainable policies and practices within our organization and our events. We want to educate all members of our community to understand the value of acting in an environmentally responsible way.

Courage

We will work to overcome internal and external obstacles that prevent us from being effective thereby continually working towards a community free from oppression.
