A Day of Clean Water Act(ion)

In 2013, thanks to the de-delegation petition filed by Iowa CCI members, the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agreed that Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wasn’t enforcing the Clean Water Act for factory farms.

The DNR was given five years to come into compliance.

Their time is almost up, and soon, the DNR will submit a final report to EPA. But has anything really changed in Iowa?

We still have manure spills, a record number of impaired waterbodies and beach advisories, inadequate DNR staffing levels, and not enough data to know what’s really going on. (Like when the agency discovered 5,000 “unknowns” last year — factory farms that slipped under the radar.)

We deserve to have the Clean Water Act fully implemented in Iowa. The factory farms littering our state should be held to higher standards — and we need a moratorium to stop any new factory farms from building!

Time is ticking, so we have a big day coming up to show that the DNR still has a lot of work to do.

We can’t let the DNR off the hook. Our original demands still need to be met.

We need:
• Tough fines and penalties that deter future pollution
• Clean Water Act permits to every factory farm in Iowa
• Good inspections that find problems and fix problems
• Transparent and user-friendly database with manure spill and inspection information
