How Systemic Racism and Anti-Blackness Operate within “Well-Intended” Vegan Spaces

Using critical race materialism, anti-racism, and Black feminisms, Dr. Harper will explore how “well-intended whiteness”, systemic racism, and covert forms of anti-Blackness operate in vegan spaces. Such spaces range from online forums, to vegan shopping guides, to vegan culinary cookbooks. She’ll be using PETA, Thug Kitchen, and the killing of Michael Brown as some examples of how these concepts play out and how we can use critical race materialism to unpack the consequences of systemic racism and “well-intended” whiteness.
