Learn on Saturdays: Succession Planting for Vegetable Gardens

February 2, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

$12

10:30 a.m. Jenny Quiner, Dogpatch Urban Garden— Succession Planting for Vegetable Gardens
Many people plant gardens in the spring and have a bounty of harvest in the summer. That way of gardening is great, but there are ways to have a more consistent harvest of produce throughout more months of the growing season. Learn the techniques to have steady, and consistent, harvest of crops from April through December.

11:30 a.m. Ed Lyon, Reiman Gardens— When Is a Weed Not a Weed?
According to Merriam-Webster, a “weed” is simply “a plant that is not valued where it is growing and is usually of vigorous growth”. Or the scientist’s definition: “A weed is simply a plant out of place”. Dandelions and clover attract a myriad of pollinators, while garlic mustard spreads rapidly and threatens local biodiversity. What causes a “weed” to earn the notoriety of invasive? Are ornamental species ecologically harmful just because they are non-native? Are native species always the best for biodiversity? Join Director Ed Lyon for an in-depth discussion of perceived “weeds” and their attributes to the ecosystem and possibly home landscape.
