In a society built upon foundations of white supremacy, it is not surprising that racism finds its way even into movements founded on anti-oppression values. The Animal Rights / Animal Liberation Movement is no different.
In this presentation, developed for a target audience of white activists within the movement, Kyla Cruz will address the ways in which racism manifests itself within the movement, discuss the shared root cause of oppression responsible for speciesism and racism, and explore how we, as white activists, must put in the work to build a movement that is inclusive and consistent in its values of anti-oppression.
While this presentation is by no means an exhaustive examination of oppressive systems, racism, speciesism, or other social justice issues, it is an informative primer for beginning to tackle anti-racist work both in a personal and activist context.
Attendees will walk away with a firmer understanding of systems of oppression and actionable items they can utilize to begin their own self-education journey while taking steps to foster inclusivity within their local activist community and spaces.
Kyla Cruz is a M.A. student at the Institute for Humane Education (https://humaneeducation.org/)
